Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
